CANTERBURY IN COLOUR
In June 2009 a local school was set the challenge to compose and perform a live musical score to accompany an archive film screening of rare pre-war colour images, in the Crypt of Canterbury Cathedral.

Inspired by music workshops with the film composer Neil Brand, pupils from at Simon Langton Grammar School for Boys produced poetry & music compositions, culminating in a fascinating performance.

Rare pre-war colour images and monotone street scenes from the 1920s combine to celebrate a seaside outing to Dymchurch from a Canterbury orphanage.

Sympathetically restored footage was set to a live-music score, composed and performed by students from years 10 & 11, with the dedicated support of their student-teacher.

Members of the audience attending said:

"I found the footage of Canterbury High Street particularly moving, even a little sad."

"It brought home the futility of war, of what Canterbury lost heritage-wise with the bombing."

"Very insightful, due to the rarity of the footage I feel lucky to have seen it!"
